Say you have GH₵100 today. You tuck it safely under your mattress or leave it in a standard bank savings account. You feel good because the number stays the same; it is still GH₵100. But fast forward to a year from now. You take that same GH₵100 to the market. Suddenly, the bag of rice or the gallon of oil you bought last year for GH₵100 now costs GH₵115.
Even though your bank balance says 100, your purchasing power has shrunk. This is inflation. If your money is earning 4% interest while the cost of living is rising by 12%, you are not saving; you are slowly losing money.
